"Western diet" of Americans is contributing to Alzheimer's
Alzheimer’s continues to be a deadly disease and there is no cure found for it as yet. As confirmed by the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia that affects the brain and there is no treatment that can stop the progression of this disease. However, a new study suggests that a simple change in diet can reduce the risk of the Alzheimer's disease.
The study was published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition and reveals that more than 42 million people are affected by Alzheimer's disease worldwide. The disease is linked to a diet that is high in meat, sweets, and dairy products that are high in fat. This diet is characteristic of the Western diet that has people consuming a high amount of meat instead of fresh fruits and vegetables, grains, and low fat dairy products.
This environmental-based study showed how the rate of Alzheimer’s in Japan increased from 1% to 7% in the span of 20-25 years. The transition of a western diet in Japan is suggested as the main cause of the spike in these figures. Although the study does focus on other countries and shares recommendations based on the country-specific risk factors, it was found that Americans were particularly at risk for the Alzheimer’s disease due to their diet.
In fact, the study claims that every person in America is at 4% risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Americans do consume high amounts of meat in their diet and so, the study recommends a low intake of meat to significantly lower the risks associated with Alzheimer’s disease and many other chronic diseases. This was concluded by looking at the Mediterranean, Indian, and Nigerian diets that do not contain as much meat and the people have 50% less risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.
